CROP REARING DURING AUTUMN
The autumn season represents a time of change that requires a structured approach to organic gardening. As the days shorten and temperatures begin to drop, autumn becomes a critical period for collecting the remaining harvest and then preparing for winter. The sweetness of crops, such as carrots and beets often increases with cooler temperatures, so it is good practice to introduce these along with other root vegetables to the garden during autumn. Cultivating root vegetables during autumn also allows for a continuous harvest. Cover crops, such as clover or rye can also be planted and these will enhance soil structure and fertility, preventing erosion and nutrient leaching over the winter months. Moreover, employing the use of organic mulching materials, such as straw will protect perennials and will generally improve soil health during autumn.
