CROP REARING DURING SUMMER
As organic gardening seeks to harness the natural elements of its environment, adherence to seasonal guidelines becomes paramount during this season. Summer tends to be a season for general maintenance and primarily harvesting and as the season unfolds, the focus shifts to maintaining the garden through diligent watering, weeding, and pest management. Mulching, which is crucial during the hotter months, is an effective technique used to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture and it is good practice to use organic pest control methods, such as neem oil, to introduce beneficial insects to the garden at this time. Harvesting of early crops also begins in earnest during this season, ensuring that vegetables are picked at their peak for optimal taste and nutritional value. It is also good practice to plant late summer crops during the summer, such as kale and winter squash, to extend the harvesting season.
